When Gary J. Svehla was 13-years-old
in 1963, an avid fan of Famous Monsters of Filmland,
he decided to publish his own "fanzine," a carbon-copied
mishmash where only 20 copies were circulated of issue one.
Today, 38 years later, that original
fanzine (Gore Creatures) has evolved into Midnight
Marquee and is still going strong. Today we sell roughly
5,000 copies of each issue.
In 1995, Midnight Marquee
became incorporated when it evolved into a small press publisher
of books on films, focusing on (but not exclusive to) the
horror film genre. Our books are quality printed and bound
softbound books, selling at the affordable price of usually
$20.00 per book. Midnight Marquee Press features a stable
of the best historians and critics writing on movies today.
Our books feature over 100 photographs per book, indexes,
bibliographies, filmographies, etc.
Gary and wife Susan Svehla, who comprise
Midnight Marquee Press, Inc, produce roughly seven
books per year and three issues of Midnight Marquee plus
a new magazine, Mad About Movies. Our book production schedule
is full for the next few years.

The first FANEX convention
was held in the fall of 1987 at the modest Howard Johnsons
Motor Lodge and attracted 199 people. In July, 2001, FANEX

suburban Baltimore County and attracted a little under a
thousand people. Barbara Shelley and Forry Ackerman received
the Laemmle Award at this convention.
The convention is dedicated to being
a weekend of "food, friends, and films" and considers
itself the best movie party in the world. Attendees usually
use the words intimate, warm, and friendly to describe the
overlapping activities involved during the three-day weekend.
Over the years we/ve featured
such special guests as Academy Award winning director Robert
Wise, Academy Award winner Margaret O'Brien, Academy Award
winning cinematographer Freddie Francis, and Academy Award
winning technician Ray Harryhausen, Christopher Lee, Janet
Leigh, Pat Hitchcock and Dorothy Herrmann. Other guests
